Splinter Creek Gift Guide

Sonia Thompson

Ready to stuff those stockings? Splinter Creek is proud to call the rolling hills of north Mississippi home, but we're no island. We have many talented neighbors in our little slice of the South. In fact, the Taylor and Oxford areas boast many small and family-owned businesses that offer great options for shopping local this holiday season. Here are a few Mississippi-centric ideas, all close to Splinter Creek.

1. Wonderbird Spirits Cask-Finished Gin
Just down the road from Splinter Creek is the Wonderbird gin distillery, where they've created a cask-aged gin that is unlike any spirit you've ever tasted. Rested in a Maker's Mark bourbon barrel for 112 days, this special, limited-release product yielded just 262 bottles. The collector's item, which shares the same botanical bill as Wonderbird's No. 61 gin, is a wonderfully smooth gin with all the complexity of its predecessor plus vanilla and spice notes brought on by the barrel. A fantastic bourbon replacement for an Old-Fashioned or to sip neat.

2. Blue Delta Bespoke Denim
Based in Oxford and Tupelo, Blue Delta Jeans is a custom jean and pant maker. Every pair is made one-of-one, using your own measurements, and then sewn by hand in Tupelo, Mississippi. Read more about the Blue Delta story and process here.

3. Crop To Pop Popcorn
Those microwave bags have nothing on this Mississippi Delta-grown popcorn. In fact, Crop to Pop is a high quality popcorn "that has been bred to maximize characteristics that create a great popcorn." It's grown at Six Mile Farms, a small family farm in Tribbett, Mississippi, that produces popcorn and heirloom corn. The farm's workforce includes a father, son and two employees. So support them by rounding up the kids for a family movie night and enjoying a bag.

4. Brown Family Dairy Ice Cream
Follow up your small-batch popcorn with a pint of small-batch ice cream. Brown Family Dairy broke hearts when they announced earlier this year that they would mostly stop production of their famous cream line milk. But some of the pain of that news was tempered by the fact that they began making ice cream instead. Find it at the Brown Dairy Butcher Store, 943 HWY 334, Oxford. We don't recommend putting it under the tree, but we do recommend it!

5. A Cozy Coffee Shop Gift Card
Lost Dog Coffee is our favorite neighborhood coffee shop, and what's better than a hot cup of joe to help you power through the holidays? Grab a few gift cards as stocking stuffers or take your loved one on a coffee date to this cozy spot in Taylor, Mississippi.
