Some Good News

Sonia Thompson

Yes, these are uncertain and trying times of sheltering in place, but there are good things happening in Oxford and Lafayette County. Members of the local government and local businesses are trouble shooting, problem solving, and evolving each day to meet the needs of people in the community. Reading the following stories, we're proud to call north Mississippi home.

1. Shop Safe, Eat Fresh
The farmers and vendors at Oxford Community Market are following protocols for a safe shopping experience at the market, so you can still purchase fresh food, straight from local farmers. They're even now offering curbside pickup.

2. The Easter Bunny Is On a Roll
Since children can't visit the Easter Bunny this year, the Easter Bunny is making her own rounds. The Easter Bunny will be driving through a different Oxford neighborhood each day, and children are invited to stand out on their porches and wave. Follow the Easter Bunny on Facebook for information on how to track her whereabouts.

3. A Hand Sanitizer Wonder
With hand sanitizer still sold out at most chain stores and online, local distilleries have stepped up. Taylor, Mississippi-based Wonderbird Spirits is temporarily making hand sanitizer for healthcare workers and businesses in need. Jackson, Mississippi-based Cathead Vodka is distributing free drums of its hand sanitizer, "Comfort & Mercy," to communities around the state, including Oxford.

4. Chicory Curbside
Shopping local has never been safer, now that Chicory Market is offering curbside groceries. The locally-owned market is now taking orders by phone and only allowing curbside pickup to ensure the health and safety of staff members and shoppers.

5. Big City Snack
John Currence has temporarily combined his local restaurant empire into one place, called Big City Snack, for easy curbside pickup of favorite dishes from Big Bad Breakfast, City Grocery, and Snackbar. In addition, Big City Snack has a limited offering of grocery essentials. All gratuity from curbside orders goes directly to their Employee Relief Fund (or donate directly through Venmo @CityGrocery-RestaurantGroup).
