Mornings at Splinter Creek are a special time, filled with quiet moments by the water, watching the fog burn off the lakes, hiking and fishing. After that, it’s time for another equally important part of the day: coffee and breakfast. Guest blogger Erin Austen Abbott shares one of her favorite a.m. dishes.
City Grocery Group is synonymous with Oxford. Chef John Currence is known first for his Oxford Square restaurant and bar City Grocery, and then for his small plate bistro Snackbar. But it’s his breakfast spot Big Bad Breakfast (or BBB to the locals) that he has expanded to other cities including Birmingham, Alabama, and Inlet Beach, Florida. The restaurant name is a play on words of late Oxford writer Larry Brown’s novel "Big Bad Love." It speaks to the literary heart of the town.
My husband and I had a morning date for biscuits recently. We crave the tomato gravy on a regular basis. It’s perfectly paired with the light and buttery Big Bad Breakfast biscuit. We always like to get a few things to share, so we ordered both the tomato gravy and the sausage gravy for variety.
I don’t think I’ve ever gone to Big Bad Breakfast and not ordered the Cathead. Its simplicity is what makes it great: a choice of meat with cheese on a biscuit. We opted for the chicken sausage, dipping bites into the gravy. We had sides of fruit, grits, and my husband had a single pancake. We left full and so happy.
BBB is great on a weekday if you’re in a hurry. Weekends on the other hand, expect a wait. Big Bad Breakfast and Snackbar (which share a kitchen), are located just a few blocks off the Square on North Lamar.
