Nature First Design

Sonia Thompson

Here's an unsettling statistic: humans today spend 90 percent of our time indoors. At Splinter Creek, we're doing our best to change that with 650 acres of land to explore and nature first design.

What is nature first design and why is it important?

Simply put, it's a way to create design that lets in natural light and greenery and stay connected to the outdoors even while inside. A host of scientific studies indicate that this kind of exposure to nature has health benefits that include stress reduction, help with focus, and even increased immunity.

In the Splinter Creek community, nature first design translates into boundaries between homesites being marked with natural elements, ravines, and trees rather than by manmade measurements, fences, or barriers.

It means lots that offer privacy and seclusion, but flow seamlessly into common spaces. And it means home design that respects the natural topography of the land, from ridges to shoreline to rolling pine and hardwood forests.

It means homeowners who want to explore the outside world around them, from the morning's first light to the last glow of sunset, and design their homes and landscape accordingly around our community's lakes and forests.
