Muffy Turley
The Scout Guide Editor Muffy Turley (pictured) shares some of her Memphis faves.

When Splinter Creek residents get hungry for a dose of city life, Memphis is the closest urban area. A short drive north from our lakes and pine forests, the Bluff City is an easy day trip with much to offer. We asked The Scout Guide Memphis Editor Muffy Turley to share a few of her favorite places and activities that embrace the soul and grit that Memphis embodies.

The Big River Crossing is a newly-opened pedestrian bridge that spans the Mississippi River.

1. Big River Crossing
Anyone traveling to Memphis should carve out some time for a visit to the Big River Crossing, the newly-opened pedestrian bridge that spans the Mississippi River. At over a mile in length, Big River Crossing is the longest public pedestrian bridge across the Mississippi, and it offers stunning views of downtown Memphis. Pro tip: time your walk around the sunset to enjoy those Delta colors!

Visitors to The Broad Avenue Arts District enjoy the public art, which is both beautiful and social media-worthy.
The public art in The Broad Avenue Arts District ranges from murals to sculpture.

2. The Broad Avenue Arts District
The Broad Avenue Arts District has enjoyed a renaissance over the past few years. Muffy loves perusing the local shops, art galleries, studios, restaurants, and bars in this tucked-away street in the heart of the city. In particular, Muffy suggests a visit to one of her favorite boutiques, 20Twelve, an ultra-modern, sleek boutique featuring on-trend designers. After shopping, enjoy a beer from local brewery Wiseacre, and then a family-style dinner from Bounty on Broad, known for its farm-to-table fare. Be on the lookout for special events, like “First Fridays on Broad” that make the entire district come alive.

3. Central BBQ
No trip to Memphis is complete without indulging in this city’s culinary claim to fame. Muffy suggests a local (and Turley family!) favorite, Central BBQ. The friendly staff and quality Memphis barbecue staples, such as ribs, pulled pork and collards greens, and banana pudding are her top dishes.

4. The Dixon Gallery & Gardens
Another one of Muffy's faves is The Dixon Gallery & Gardens. Located in East Memphis, the art collection and public gardens are magnificent and The Dixon has many culturally enriching events for guests of all ages throughout the year.
