Childhood Unplugged

Sonia Thompson

Photographer Monica Calderin launched Childhood Unplugged about four years ago as a collaborative project and challenge to fellow photographers and mothers. The goal was refreshingly simple: encourage children to play – without their ever-present gadgets and screens. Her blogging journey of documenting childhood and her conscious effort to encourage children to get back to the art of play without technology resonated in a big way. Today, #childhoodunplugged has grown to more than 8 million social media mentions and hashtags. Splinter Creek photographer Erin Austen Abbott has captured many #childhoodunplugged moments at Splinter Creek, if you'd like to take a look.
